Karangasem truck driver dies after alleged attack by employer

Denpasar — I Gede Selamet, a truck driver from Muncan Village, Karangasem, died at Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar on Friday, 25 September 2026, after suffering severe burns in an alleged attack by his employer.

Selamet had been receiving intensive treatment for about a week. Bali Post reported that he suffered burns to 68 percent of his body and died after undergoing surgery, while detikBali reported that the incident followed an argument over money collected from deliveries.

Police case continues

The alleged attacker was identified as I Putu Cahyadi Putra, 37, Selamet’s employer. Police said the incident occurred on 18 September in Muncan Village, Selat district, Karangasem, when Selamet was allegedly set on fire inside a room.

According to detikBali, Selamet ran outside with his body burning and called for help before being taken for medical treatment. The reports describe the case as an alleged deliberate burning; the final legal determination remains with the criminal-justice process.

DetikBali reported that Cahyadi had initially faced a possible sentence of up to seven years. Following Selamet’s death, the maximum potential sentence could rise to nine years under the relevant criminal provision, according to a separate report.

Tribun Bali reported that the legal process would continue after Selamet’s death, citing the Selat police chief. The case remains centred on the alleged assault in Muncan Village and the circumstances that led to Selamet’s fatal injuries.
