Bali Deports French National After 100-Day Overstay

Denpasar — A 22-year-old French national identified by the initials YGB was deported from Bali through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on Sept. 18 after overstaying an Indonesian visit permit by 100 days, according to reports published Sept. 19.

The report comes as Indonesian immigration authorities and police have increased scrutiny of foreign nationals in Bali’s tourism areas. The measures focus on identifying immigration violations and other unlawful activity involving foreign visitors and residents.

Why the deportation matters to foreign visitors

For a foreigner in Indonesia, an overstay of more than 60 days can lead to deportation and a possible re-entry ban rather than an ordinary daily-fine process. The Denpasar immigration office said YGB voluntarily reported himself before officials carried out the enforcement procedure.

YGB entered Indonesia on April 2 using a Visit Stay Permit. After the permit expired, he remained in the country for 100 days beyond the authorized period. He left Indonesia on an AirAsia flight at 12:10 WITA (UTC+8).

The action was conducted by the Intelligence and Immigration Enforcement Section of the Denpasar Class I TPI Immigration Office. TPI, or Immigration Checkpoint, is the Indonesian border-control unit operating at ports and airports. The deportation took place at the Immigration Checkpoint at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The reports attributed the action to Article 78, paragraph 3, of Indonesia’s 2011 Immigration Law. That provision allows immigration administrative measures, including deportation and a ban on re-entering Indonesia, when a foreign national remains in the country more than 60 days after a stay permit expires.

Separately, official immigration information says that overstaying can result in fines, detention, deportation or a future travel ban, depending on the circumstances. The reports do not state the length of any ban imposed on YGB.
