Denpasar — Bali recorded around 4.6 million international tourist arrivals through August 2026, according to the provincial tourism office, as Denpasar moves to strengthen sport-focused tourism to support local businesses and the creative economy.
The Denpasar city administration is positioning sport tourism as a way to draw domestic and overseas participants into the wider hospitality sector, while channeling more spending toward micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and creative industries.
In mid-September, Bali Provincial Tourism Agency Head I Wayan Sumarajaya said tourist visits to Bali had reached approximately 4.6 million by August 2026 and remained stable while still growing compared with the same period in 2025, without specifying the exact year-on-year increase.
Denpasar links sports and local business
Denpasar Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa has publicly backed the use of sporting events as long-term tourism assets rather than one-off competitions, arguing that they can help promote destinations, local enterprises and the creative economy.
Local media report that Arya Wibawa views sport tourism as a way to showcase Denpasar’s attractions and generate demand for accommodation, food and beverage and other services provided by MSMEs, while maintaining cultural and environmental standards.
On 14 September 2026, Arya Wibawa received a Special Recognition Award – Outstanding Leadership in Advancing Sport Tourism in Bali 2026 at the 11th Bali Tourism Award held at The Meru in Sanur, where he framed the initiative as the result of joint efforts by the city administration, residents, sports communities and tourism stakeholders.
According to coverage of the event, he said the award was both an honour and a motivation to continue developing sport-based tourism in Denpasar, underlining the city’s potential to attract domestic and international visitors through a range of sporting activities.
Focus on sustainable, higher-quality tourism
Sumarajaya linked Bali’s arrival figures to broader goals of improving tourism quality and sustainability, calling on the industry to provide comfortable, high-quality services while safeguarding local communities and Balinese customs and traditions.
Denpasar’s sport tourism push is being framed within these priorities, with officials and local outlets highlighting the need for events that respect culture, support small businesses and help distribute tourism benefits more evenly across the city.
While officials have pointed to various sports activities already drawing participation from residents and visitors, they have not yet detailed a consolidated event calendar, specific visitor targets or funding mechanisms for future sport tourism programmes.
