BPBD NTB logs 143 disasters, nearly 950,000 people affected

West Nusa Tenggara recorded 143 disaster incidents between January 1 and August 31, 2026, affecting a reported 948,730 people, according to BPBD NTB data.

MataramWest Nusa Tenggara province recorded 143 disaster incidents between 1 January and 31 August 2026, affecting a reported 948,730 people, according to data from the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD NTB) cited in local media and official provincial publications.

BPBD NTB identified flooding as the most frequent hazard over the eight‑month period, followed by extreme weather and landslides, with the series of events causing six deaths and 14 injuries and no people recorded as missing, according to the same dataset.

The figures cover incidents across nine regencies and cities in the province, based on BPBD NTB monitoring of hydrometeorological and geological hazards.

Flooding dominated the disaster profile

According to the BPBD NTB data reported by TribunLombok.com, flooding accounted for 66 of the 143 incidents recorded to the end of August 2026.

Extreme weather, including strong winds and heavy rain, was recorded in 41 incidents, while landslides were reported 13 times during the period.

The same dataset lists nine forest and land fires and nine regency or city‑level drought incidents, along with three events attributed to tidal waves or coastal abrasion and two earthquakes.

BPBD NTB’s records show impacts on housing across the province, with 553 homes damaged: 29 heavily damaged, 63 moderately damaged and 461 lightly damaged.

In addition, 21,757 homes were temporarily inundated by floodwaters in various locations.

Bima recorded the most incidents

Within the provincial tally, Bima Regency recorded the highest number of incidents, with 45 disasters reported by BPBD NTB for the January–August period.

TribunLombok.com reports that Bima’s total included 29 floods, six forest and land fires and one extreme‑weather incident, with the remaining events in the regency not fully broken down by hazard type.

West Lombok Regency was reported to have 24 incidents, including nine floods, eight extreme‑weather events and four landslides, while Central Lombok recorded 19 incidents, led by eight extreme‑weather events, seven floods and three landslides.

Sumbawa Regency recorded 12 incidents, including eight floods and three landslides, and North Lombok reported 10 incidents, six of which were attributed to extreme weather.

East Lombok Regency registered 11 incidents with a mix of floods, landslides and forest and land fires, while Dompu had nine incidents, mainly floods and landslides, and the city of Mataram reported four incidents dominated by extreme weather.

The district and city‑level figures cited in the media total 134 incidents, slightly below the provincial aggregate of 143 incidents reported by BPBD NTB for the same period.

Hydrometeorological risks remain in focus

BPBD NTB’s disaster data portray flooding and extreme weather as the leading hazards affecting the province in 2026, consistent with earlier provincial communications that highlighted hydrometeorological risks, including floods and strong winds, as major drivers of damage to homes and public facilities.

In January 2026 alone, BPBD NTB recorded 52 hydrometeorological disasters, with 44,058 people affected and 428 homes damaged across Lombok and Sumbawa, illustrating the ongoing vulnerability of communities and housing to heavy rain and associated flooding.

Provincial authorities have linked recent disaster patterns to seasonal rainfall and, more recently, to the development of El Niño conditions that have intensified both flood and drought risks across West Nusa Tenggara.
