Kintamani — A major religious ceremony at Pura Hulundanu Batur in Songan, Kintamani, on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, has renewed attention on Lake Batur’s role as both a sacred site and a stressed freshwater resource. The Danu Kertih observance forms part of Karya Tawur Agung Manca Wali Krama, a temple ceremony held on a 10-year cycle, according to local media coverage.
The ceremony included important lake-focused rituals such as mapakelem in Lake Batur (Danu Kertih) and Gunung Batur (Wana Kertih), along with mendak tirta amertha, which centre on sacred water and offerings. Regional leaders attending the event used their remarks to link spiritual harmony with environmental care, presenting Lake Batur as a vital water source for the island.
The peak of Karya Tawur Agung Manca Wali Krama is scheduled for Saturday, 26 September 2026, coinciding with the full moon of Sasih Kapat, with the broader series of rituals running from mid-August to early October. The observance is framed as a collective effort to seek safety, prosperity and balance between the human, natural and spiritual realms of Bali.
A lake at the heart of ritual and supply
Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa characterised the ceremony as more than a routine religious obligation, describing it as an expression of respect for nature and referring to Lake Batur as a kind of “jantung air Bali” or heart of Bali’s water. This framing underscores how the lake functions not only as a ritual landscape for communities around Songan and Kintamani, but also as a key part of broader island water systems.
Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta and Bangli Regent Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta likewise praised the organisers and linked the ceremony’s meaning to harmony across Bali, signalling that the lake’s significance extends beyond the local customary area. The gathering drew officials from Badung, Bangli, Karangasem and Tabanan, giving the occasion a wider regional presence.
The religious work at Pura Hulundanu Batur is recognised as a Karya Agung with a special 10-year cycle, rooted in the temple’s status within the island’s network of major water temples. As such, Danu Kertih provides a focal point for connecting ritual language about balance and purity with practical concerns over the state of the lake and its watershed.
Lake Batur’s ecological condition
Scientific studies over the past decade have documented mounting pressures on Lake Batur’s ecosystem, including declining water quality, eutrophication, sedimentation and shoreline degradation. Research cited by Bali-based scholars and environmental agencies has found that Lake Batur experiences pollution levels ranging from light to moderate, driven by domestic wastewater, intensive aquaculture in floating cages, agriculture, tourism and pesticide use in the catchment.
A dynamic systems modelling study and related lake management planning documents report significant sedimentation between the 1970s and early 2010s, contributing to measurable shallowing of the lake and loss of storage volume. Other work using pollution indices and water quality indices has classified Lake Batur as experiencing light to moderate contamination, with some parameters such as ammonia, dissolved solids and total phosphates exceeding applicable standards at certain sites.
In 2024, a researcher from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry described Lake Batur as one of 15 Indonesian lakes now categorised as critical, citing problems of sedimentation, pollution and ecological degradation linked to human activities around the lake. These findings align with longer-running concerns documented in lake management plans and academic studies, which highlight the need for tighter control of aquaculture, improved wastewater treatment, and better land-use management in the lake’s catchment.
Ritual commitment and policy gaps
Coverage of the Danu Kertih ceremony emphasises the cultural and spiritual importance of Lake Batur and the call from regional leaders to care for the lake as a central water source. However, the reports do not detail specific government budgets, restoration targets, monitoring schedules or enforcement measures tied directly to the 2026 ceremony.
Academic and policy documents identify multiple institutions with partial responsibility for Lake Batur’s management, from national environment agencies to provincial and district governments, but they also note ongoing challenges in coordination, enforcement and funding for remediation. In this context, the 10-year ceremony can be seen as a moment that publicly reaffirms the lake’s importance, while much of the operational work of rehabilitation and protection remains the subject of separate environmental programmes and future policy decisions.
The Danu Kertih observance at Pura Hulundanu Batur therefore sits at the intersection of ritual stewardship and environmental stress. As officials invoke the lake’s role as a “heart” of Bali’s water, the scientific record points to continuing pollution, sedimentation and critical status, underscoring the need for transparent data, clear institutional responsibilities and sustained investment if the values expressed in ceremony are to translate into long-term protection for Lake Batur.
