Gianyar advances Ubud intersection works to ease congestion

Ubud — The Gianyar regency government is pressing ahead with improvements at the Ambengan–Laplapan intersection on Sept. 25, 2026, as part of an effort to ease congestion in the tourism district.

The change comes as traffic in Ubud is frequently heavy at certain hours, particularly on routes from Andong, Peliatan and western Jalan Raya Ubud. The project includes widening the northern approach from one lane to three lanes and improving drainage near the area behind the Arjuna statue, according to Bali Post.

For foreign residents and visitors, the practical effect is that vehicles travelling through the intersection may be directed along alternative routes during busy periods. The Gianyar Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency said periodic road closures or traffic engineering measures would be announced when scheduled. The report asks road users travelling between Laplapan and Ubud, as well as from Andong and Peliatan, to use alternative routes during peak hours.

Why the Ubud works matter to visitors

The Ambengan–Laplapan junction links several routes used to reach central Ubud and surrounding tourism areas. Temporary changes there can affect journeys between accommodation, attractions and nearby communities, even though the report does not specify a permanent closure or a fixed timetable for diversions.

The widening plan is intended to allow traffic from Andong to continue leftward and traffic from Ambengan toward Peliatan to proceed without stopping at the junction. The works also address drainage in the same area. Bali Post identified the intersection as a response to severe congestion rather than as a general closure of Ubud roads.

What happens next depends on the work schedule. Periodic closures or traffic-management measures will be announced as they are arranged, while road users are asked to use alternative routes during busy hours.
