Denpasar — A 2024 study of tourism spending in Denpasar found that accommodation accounted for 40,45 percent of international visitors’ daily expenditure, making it the largest single category in the city’s tourism economy.

The findings come from the Denpasar Tourism Spending Study 2024, which examined how visitors distributed money across accommodation, food, local transportation, shopping and souvenirs, tour guides, attraction fees, watersports, spa and wellness services, and nightlife entertainment.

The study recorded average international-visitor spending of IDR 2.242.540 (about US$142) per day, with an average stay of 9,28 days. It also found that food and beverages represented 14,51 percent of daily spending, local transportation 9,28 percent, spa and wellness 9,07 percent, tour-guide services 6,48 percent, and watersports 5,08 percent.

Why the Denpasar spending data matters

The figures show that tourism income already reaches several parts of the local economy, even as accommodation remains dominant. For businesses and policymakers, the distribution points to opportunities in food, transport, wellness, guiding and water-based activities rather than relying on hotel spending alone.

The Denpasar Tourism Office’s related survey covered visitors staying in the city. Through November 2024, Denpasar recorded 1.772.975 visitors, including 448.425 international visitors and 1.324.550 domestic visitors. International visitors’ average daily spending rose 11,3 percent from 2023 to 2024, reaching IDR 2.242.540 (about US$142).

The data therefore describes both the scale and the concentration of visitor spending: accommodation captured the largest share, while the remaining categories together represented a substantial part of daily expenditure. The study’s category breakdown provides a basis for assessing how tourism receipts are distributed across Denpasar’s wider visitor economy. The findings also identify the areas beyond accommodation that form significant parts of visitors’ daily spending in the city.
