Nusa Penida — Kazuki Kiyohara, a 22-year-old Japanese man, drowned at Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida after falling into a deep sea trough while swimming near rocks on March 4, 2020.
The incident occurred at about 11 a.m., according to a statement from Bali’s Search and Rescue Agency, known as Basarnas. Kiyohara was seen walking along the beach before entering the water and moving toward the rocks. A local resident and another tourist brought him ashore after he became unconscious, and an attempt was made to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Medical staff at Pratama Nusa Penida Hospital later declared him dead. His body was subsequently transported to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.
The drowning underscores the risks around Atuh Beach
For foreign visitors, the account illustrates how quickly conditions can become dangerous around Nusa Penida’s rocky coastline. The report describes a deep sea trough near the rocks and a rescue attempt that reached the shore but could not revive the swimmer. It does not state that a lifeguard service was present or identify any official swimming restriction at the beach.
The incident was handled locally before Basarnas evacuated the body. The report identifies the deceased as Kazuki Kiyohara and places the medical response at Pratama Nusa Penida Hospital, followed by transportation to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.
