Bali — Balinese Hindu communities will observe Tumpek Wayang on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, a sacred day linked to artistic traditions and worship of Bhatara Iswara. The observance returns every 210 days under the Balinese calendar.

The day is associated with offerings for artistic equipment, including wayang and musical instruments. The tradition also includes pandan berduri, or thorny pandan, which is described as a symbolic protection against danger and negative influences.

In Gianyar, the Bali provincial government is scheduled to hold a communal prayer at Pura Kahyangan Jagat Er Jeruk in Sukawati from 8 a.m. WITA until completion. The event is part of a wider effort to preserve the cultural and spiritual values associated with Balinese Hindu practice.

Why Tumpek Wayang matters to Bali’s cultural life

Tumpek Wayang is one of six Tumpek observances in the 210-day cycle. Its focus is not limited to stage performances: it encompasses the objects and instruments used in artistic practice, from gamelan and gambang to gender, angklung, selonding, kentongan, genta and wayang.

For visitors and foreign residents, the observance means that artistic objects may be taken out of ordinary use for ritual attention, while temples and community spaces may host ceremonies. The day is a religious observance rather than a public entertainment event, and participation or access to a ceremony depends on local arrangements.

The date coincides with Kajeng Kliwon Uwudan, another Balinese Hindu observance. Together, the two observances make Oct. 10 a notable date in the October 2026 Balinese religious calendar. The provincial ceremony in Sukawati provides a public setting for the observance, while household and community rituals take place across Bali.
