Lombok Tengah — On October 21, 2026, residents of Segala Anyar Village in Pujut, Central Lombok, were documented processing livestock waste into organic fertiliser and collecting recyclable materials through a new community-based Waste Station.

The station collects livestock manure, plastic bottles, plastic cups, cardboard and used cooking oil. Organic waste is processed into fertiliser, while inorganic materials are sold or reused as products with economic value.

The initiative is being carried out by a team from the University of Mataram through the BIMA programme of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. It involves the Climate-Aware Community Group and micro, small and medium enterprises in Segala Anyar Village.

Why the Waste Station matters to visitors and residents

Segala Anyar is in Pujut, an area that includes communities supporting the Mandalika tourism economy. For foreign residents and visitors, the project shows how waste management is being organised at village level rather than relying only on disposal. Materials that might otherwise accumulate or pollute the surroundings are being channelled into fertiliser, reusable goods or sales.

Nurtaat, the chair of the Climate-Aware Community Group, said livestock manure that had previously accumulated and risked causing pollution was now being processed into organic fertiliser. Plastic cups, plastic bottles, cardboard and used cooking oil were also being collected because they had economic value.

Residents said proceeds from selling collected waste had not yet met daily needs but were providing additional income for the community group. The system also introduced weighing intended to make transactions more transparent.

The programme’s second year is expected to focus on strengthening organic and inorganic waste businesses, developing handicrafts, improving management capacity and expanding marketing networks. The organisers hope organic fertiliser and handicraft products will become leading products of Segala Anyar Village.
